Bridging Hope Charity Foundation continues philanthropic support for UNSW Art & Design’s ANNUAL 2019 and TWT Excellence Prize Winner 2019 Announced.
Bridging Hope Charity Foundation continues to support UNSW’s A&D ANNUAL 2019 graduate exhibition under a five-year commitment, which will feature the work of more than 150 emerging creative artists. Presented from 3 -14 December, the A&D ANNUAL is Australia’s largest and most diverse national showcase of graduate contemporary art, design and creative media work.
At an event at UNSW to celebrate the partnership, the Bridging Hope Charity Foundation also revealed the third winner of the TWT Excellence Prize 2019, an annual award for a graduating student that will be offered until 2021.
Graduating artist Joshua Reeves was awarded the $5,000 TWT Excellence Prize, which includes a $3,000 bursary and the offer of one-year use of an artist studio at St Leonards Creative Precinct valued at $2,000. Fellow graduating student Anqi Gao also received a Highly Commended award for her work ‘Ocean Coffee Dream’.
Established in 2017, the annual TWT Excellence Prize is awarded to the top graduating artist presenting work in the ANNUAL 19, Australia’s largest and most diverse national showcase of graduate contemporary art, design and creative media. The Prize considers digital media, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, furniture and jewellery design, and ceramic works. The UNSW faculty selected 10 shortlisted artworks based on promise and professional commitment to being a full-time artist. The winner was selected by a panel consisting of: Professor Marie Sierra, Deputy Dean UNSW Art & Design, Dr Mark Ian Jones, Deputy Head of School (Design), Ms Debra Phillips, Senior Lecturer, School of Art, Ms Caroline Rothwell, established Artist and UNSW Alumna; and Anke Timm, Chief Executive at Bridging Hope Charity Foundation.
Reeves’ work uses “junk and everyday objects, especially objects that have been in [his] traumatic memories” to “create a space that is accessible, multilayered and sensitive”. “The work is a retelling of stories, feelings, truths with an openness to playful iterations of hard times,” he says. “I love making people laugh, and I’ve found jokes and humour to be a really great way to open up conversations around domestic abuse and trauma. “Writing and drawing are also central to my practice. I’m always drawing the objects I find and moving them around the page. It’s a very productive space for me to generate ideas and keep my ideas flexible before I make sculptural decisions.”
Bridging Hope Charity Foundation founder Tina Tian said:“Bridging Hope Charity Foundation is delighted to support the ANNUAL, UNSW’s exhibition to launch the next generation of artists, designers, makers and digital media creators. As the Exclusive Supporter for the ANNUAL and with our TWT Excellence Prize, we encourage young graduates to celebrate and professionalise their artistic practise. We are delighted to announce … as the 2019 winner of the TWT Excellence Prize and we look forward to seeing how his artistic practice grows in the future. We invite friends, family and industry partners to experience the wonderful energy showcased at the truly vibrant exhibition.”
Ms Tian, a passionate philanthropist in the fields of mental health and the arts, founded Bridging Hope Charity Foundation in 2015. Building on the important work delivered by the Foundation in China, the Australian arm of the Foundation seeks to give back to local communities by supporting the twin pillars of mental health and well-being initiatives and arts programs throughout Australia.
“UNSW Art & Design has an outstanding record for producing critically acclaimed artists and the ANNUAL 19 exemplifies this. We are proud to producing the next generation of cutting-edge artists and designers,” says Dean Ross Harley. “We are delighted to have support from TWT and Bridging Hope Charity Foundation as we commemorate the students.”
The 2019 exhibition will be presented across seven venues at UNSW Art & Design’s Paddington campus including UNSW Galleries; Kudos Gallery; AD Space; Black Box; Interactive Media Lab; The Lecture Theatre; and Makerspace: Virtual Reality Lab.
