Form, structure and the interplay of colour are important aspects of my paintings. I like to work impulsively and spontaneously, allowing my landscapes to be translated by the immediacy of my brushstrokes. Broad, swift movements to enhance a rhythm in the work that exists naturally in the environment itself.
I spend hours observing the natural world and interrogating coastlines with endless field studies – quick linear sketches that get me thinking about what lies beneath the surface of the land. How hills and cliffs come forward or recede, how the contours of the land provide an illusion of distance.
More and more I am trying to uncover the abstract, the shapes and rhythms that provide me with a pictorial equivalent of reality. To see the distance, look beyond it and get to the far side.
