INTERNATIONAL ARTIST CHOSEN FOR MAJOR ULTIMO DEVELOPMENT

Chinese artist Xia Hang, whose sculpture recently featured in Sydney, at Bondi’s world renowned ‘Sculpture by the Sea’ exhibition, has been selected by TWT Property Group to activate a new laneway at its NewLife Darling Harbour development at 495 Harris Street in Ultimo.

This new artwork titled Memory Tree, will transform and become the heart of a new laneway by way of its intricate, kinetic-lit, six metre-high ‘tree’ inspired by Hang’s childhood love of early animations such as the Transformers series, which steered him towards a style he refers to as Steampunk – the melding of ancient and traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery with virtual reality.

Hang describes his work as “modern Western visually, with a traditional Chinese inside,” and added that the process of creating his particular style of works is a reflection of our ever-increasing engagement with digital mediums.

TWT Director Gavin Zhang said, “Art is seen by TWT not merely as an embellishment, but is at the very core of everything that the company creates. Art is important for wellbeing, and should be part of everyday life”.

“TWT is deeply committed to supporting the community; as part of this we are the Major Supporter of Bridging Hope Charity Foundation (BHCF), dedicated to wellbeing through supporting major mental health and art initiatives. TWT and BHCF invest time and thought into every detail of the communities we curate, to ensure that it will enhance the quality of life and lifestyle of future residents and visitors alike,” Mr. Zhang explains.

“We believe that creating beautiful and meaningful spaces for residents should extend much further than just the walls and walkways of a building”.

He added that Memory Tree will bring a powerful aesthetic to NewLife that complements the development’s compelling architecture and surrounding urban Ultimo landscape.

“We are thrilled to be working with such an intuitive and expressive artist, and are proud to offer Memory Tree as a permanent public artwork to the city and are delighted that the City of Sydney is so supportive of this artwork.”

The new laneway and public space will link Harris Street to the east, Kirk Lane to the north and Bulwarra Road to the west.

Memory Tree will be the first permanent public artwork for Xia Hang, who studied at the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, has exhibited at Art Basel Miami, in Singapore, Moscow, ART Taipei, ART Singapore and is in the White Rabbit Gallery
